Aerostat
Mechanical and reusable smoke-sensitive helium tank for early fire detection
Duration: 6 weeks
Year: 2021
Awards: Prototypes for Humanity Environment Category - 1st Place, IMMIB 2021 Industrial Design Competition - 3rd Place
The Problem
Early detection and intervening before the fire spreads plays a critical role in forest fires. In 2021, more than 150 thousand hectares of forest area were affected by forest fires in Turkey and the settlement turned to ash and thousands of animals died. These fires were the starting point and inspiration of my project.
Final Product
How does it work?
Aerostat is a mechanical fire detector which inflates when smoke is detected and rises above the tree canopy, meaning that official in watchtowers can see the warning before the fire spreads. If smoke is detected by the ionization smoke alarm, the helium tank inside the product will actively inflate the balloon located on the top cover.
Once the product has been inflated, the helium tank can be replaced with a full tank and reused. Usable at night due to the phosphorescent material.
Scenario
The product is placed in convenient points of the forest.
If there is smoke in the forest, the smoke detector within the product will detect it.
The detector is activated, which triggers the system and enables the balloon to inflate.
The officer at the forest watchtower sees the balloon and moves to intervene.
It is a cost effective solution and offers high service life with a low power consumption.
For low income countries which doesn't have advanced forest fire detection systems like remote monitoring centres and data operation systems; this product can be life changing.
It requires no maintenance or servicing since it operates solely on solar power.
